Those desiring speedily to be
A refuge for themselves and others,
Should make the interchange of “I” and “other,”
And thus embrace a sacred mystery.
All the joy the world contains
Has come through wishing happiness for others,
All the misery the world contains
Has come through wanting pleasure for oneself.
May I be the doctor and the medicine
And may I be the nurse
For all the sick beings in the world
Until everyone is healed.
Shantideva
